The Refined Greenwich Village Apartment of a Successful Self-Starter
With its marble façade and original stained glass windows—reminiscent of the space’s past life as a church—the historic New York City building, which used to be home to actor Jude Law, caught the eye of a young chief legal and operating officer at a startup. She then purchased one of its eight modern loft condos and made it her own.
Spread over 1,900 square feet with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, the apartment features an unconventional layout that Laura Hur, founder of Lorla Studio, took advantage of. The family room is located just inside the entry while the open kitchen and dining areas are at the other end of the unit, accessible through an expansive hallway. Off the patio, the primary suite comprises a walk-in dressing room and an en suite bathroom while the front office doubles as a guest bedroom.
“Because the unit is on the garden level, it has some funky ceiling conditions,” says Hur. “Parts of the living room ceilings are much lower than others, with large, bulky soffits to conceal the building’s duct work. Similarly, there is a long soffit that runs the length of the hallway.” The Clare paint in Whipped—a dreamy, warm white—that covers the walls and ceilings in the common areas provides a neutral backdrop for the home accents throughout. These include vintage and custom pieces of furniture, sculptural lighting fixtures, soft textiles, handmade ceramics and artworks by LRNCE, Taryn Brown and Jenny Pennywood, among others.
The finishes on the windows and doors were updated with black and satin brass handles and hardware. “Though seemingly only small details, these changes helped give the space a chic, modern look, with a balanced contrast between the white walls and light wood floors,” says Hur. Touches of gray and neutral shades of blush and pinks were introduced throughout, combined with marble, tadelakt and oak. “Our client is sophisticated and sexy, and we wanted the colors, materials and vibe of the space to embody this,” the interior designer concludes.
